Dr John retired from specialist clinical practice in the private sector on 30 June 2022. He continues in his long-standing role as Consultant Paediatric Dentist and Chairman at the Department of Dental Medicine, Perth Children’s Hospital, and Clinical Associate Professor of Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Western Australia.

Dr John has provided faithful specialist paediatric dental care to the children of Western Australia for more than 30 years and has played a key role in training and developing the clinical skills of the next generation of Specialist Paediatric Dentists in Perth.

Dr John completed his undergraduate dental training and post-graduate specialist training at the University of Western Australia (UWA), becoming registered as a Specialist Paediatric Dentist in 1989. After working in rural communities across WA, he was awarded a Telethon Fellowship to study and work at the University of Pittsburgh Cleft Lip and Palate Centre in the US.

Dr John is the Chair of the Dental Department at Perth’s Children’s Hospital, continuing his 25 year association with WA’s only paediatric teaching hospital. Dr Winters is a Clinical Lecturer at the UWA Dental School, and is responsible for the clinical training of post-graduates in Perth studying to become Specialist Paediatric Dentists. In fact Dr John and Dr Siva first worked together at Princess Margaret Hospital more than 15 years ago when Dr Siva completed a two year Paediatric Dental Registrar training program under Dr John’s guidance.

Dr John is an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry, the Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry, the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry, the Australian Dental Association, the Australasian Cleft Palate Association, and the International Association for Dental Research. He has served as the Federal President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry.

Outside dentistry, Dr John enjoys scuba diving, 4-wheel driving, cycling, reading and photography. Dr John married his wife Mary while he was still in dental school, and celebrated his silver wedding anniversary by taking his wife to dinner, in the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
